Da-Dum (Theme notes from Law & Order)

You know you’re deprived when you get way too excited to see a copy of The Straits Times on primetime television in America. Even if it was for half a millisecond. Singapore and oddly enough, the “Royal Orchid Hotel”, figured prominently on tonight’s episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Yes, we were mentioned in the course of a murder investigation, but I loved the fact that we weren’t exoticized or linked to the words “chewing gum ban”. Isn’t it sad that I am uber sensitive to how our tiny island is portrayed that I celebrate every little non-judgemental reflection of Singapore?

The Most Important Instrument

…in the kitchen is the knife. Think about all the times you had to saw through a tomato. Or when you had to chop to cut a piece of meat. Food prep is the heart of cooking, but it sometimes can be monotonous and back-breaking. A good knife makes the difference between chore and enjoyment. My $8 knife has served me well over the years, but I think I’m ready for the big boys.

Chef Anthony Bourdain recently told a Canadian newspaper his favorite brand of knife was Global. I like the sound of that. Plus I’m his groupie and I’ll buy anything Anthony Bourdain puts his name to.

A New Year

This new year has given us a lot to think about. May everyone be well wherever they are.
